It is, I, Gwenny here with yet another written episode of Ducky's Log. Hope you had a lovely week wherever you are. The sickness I've been down with is only as of the day before yesterday slowly clearing up, bringing my motivation back in full swing in time. Anyway, time to blab about an unlikely favorite that I put off for many years since I first heard about it. The game I was hesitant to play for so long. Yep. We're talking Fortnite. What is Fortnite, you ask? Basically, it's one of those online last man standing games, but with a bonus of in game concerts and creator based games within a game, if you will.
With the introduction out of the way, my unlikely journey with Fortnite started out like this. From what I can remember, around the time it was still fairly new, it was brought to my attention via a Facebook post from an online friend of mine; however, the nature of the post regarding Fortnite in question was pretty negative, specifically people who play it.
Said friend's later posts would highlight the gist of what the reasons were, such as the players being underage and/or hackers. Because of the aforementioned stuff that was said about the game as well as further controversy surrounding the game, for the longest time, I was hesitant to play it. The first time I was asked to play was by an IRL friend via video chat, and I obviously said no. Several years later, however, yet another opportunity to play came via yet another online friend who kept pestering me via Discord to play with him on there, to which I finally said yes and gave it a chance, though not without some technical hiccups beforehand that occurred. But hey, every journey has to start somewhere right?
Alas, that particular online friendship was short lived for reasons I won't go into here out of respect for his privacy, but I did at least manage to play with him for the first and only time after previous sessions didn't go into fruition, and that first and only time was a blast. We did some mashup jams together in the lobby shortly before the actual gaming session. Once the battle royale session took place, he managed to take down two people at once. Quite the impressive feat. Then he got shot down and I was able to heal him up in time, but then we both died and he rage quit. In between that and afterwards, I've actually ended up enjoying it of my own accord. Heck, I've actually gone solo majority of the time and it is still quite the learning curve. That's just part of the Fortnite journey thus far.
One of my favorite things about Fortnite and quite the unique aspect of it is the ability to make jams and impromptu mashups. The best example of the mashups from my experience is definitely the impromptu mashup that short lived friend and I did of "Snow, "(Hey Oh)" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and "Gimme Chocolate" by BABYMETAL. It's the biggest thing in the game for me that makes me wish I played it much, much sooner. One of my biggest caveats though is that it is heavily monetized, so the only way to not get tempted to spend on anything that catches my eye is to stay away from the shop entirely. A favorite item or complete set I want I can't afford to spend would be gone in the blink of an eye if I don't get it before the time runs out. Frustrating part of the journey, but one that if I'm continuing to be really careful, can still make the game enjoyable as it is.
All in all, the best and only battle royale game I have ever played thus far and one I genuinely enjoy. Please know that if any of you are still going to be put off by Fortnite, I won't hold anything against you and you are not obligated to play if you don't want to. But for those that do badly want to play, always weigh your options and when you do play, find what battle style best works for you. That's all for now.
Hope you have a lovely week!
